Professional Engineers Ontario

Established on June 14, 1922, Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) is the licensing and regulating body for professional engineering in the province. PEO operates under the authority of the Professional Engineers Act to serve and protect the public interest by setting and upholding high academic, experience and professional practice standards for the engineering profession.

Individuals licensed by PEO are the only people permitted by law to undertake and assume responsibility for engineering work in Ontario.

There are five different types of licence: Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), Engineering Intern (EIT), Limited Licence, Provisional Licence, Temporary Licence, Consulting Engineers. Currently there are 85 000 P.Eng. members in Ontario, EIT, Provisional Licence, Limited Licence, Temporary Licence.

PEO – Ottawa Chapter

Professional Engineers Ontario – Headquarters (PEO-HQ) is supported by local PEO chapters in different cities. Currently there are 36 active chapters in Ontario.

The PEO – Ottawa Chapter (oPEO) was founded in 1960 and over the years has become the largest Chapter in Ontario, with over 8 500 members.

Through our events, each year the oPEO implements a program to deliver on the core directives of PEO: 1) to facilitate communication between PEO Council and its members; 2) to provide a forum for discussion of local engineering matters, professional development and social outreach; and 3) to promote public awareness of the engineering profession.
