Welcome Engineers!
It is again my honour to be the Chair of the Ottawa Chapter of the Professional Engineers of Ontario in 2018 – the 96th year of the existence of the Professional Engineers Ontario – a self governing profession that licenses provincial Engineers and regulates professional engineering in Ontario to serve and protect the public.
The Ottawa Chapter is the largest Chapter with over 8,500 members and covers the Ottawa Valley. It is managed by an Executive Committee consisting of five Officers and up to nine Directors, under the authority of the Professional Engineers Act as governed by the Chapter Mandate:
- To facilitate participation and training of license holders in the governance, succession planning for PEO leadership, and statutory duties of the profession;
- To work to identify the value of the profession to future license holders;
- To promote and enhance understanding within society of the self-regulated engineering profession and the importance of licensure;
- To actively participate in PEO’s policy development.
Assisting your Chapter’s executive are a group of dedicated volunteers who work to plan develop and deliver a comprehensive program of events which enable our members and the next generation of engineers to develop their individual skills & knowledge. These programs are focused on specific areas of interest including:
- Education and Outreach events – Student Competitions, Engineering Awareness events, Schools Visits, Student Members, Science Fairs, Student Papers, Engineer-In-Residence liaison;
- Networking events – Seminars, Tours, Professional Development activities, Panel Discussions, Symposiums;
- Support Programs – Government Liaison Program (interacting with MPPs and Civic Leaders), New membership certificate ceremonies (New Members Night) and Mentorship Program for Engineers in Training.
I am fortunate to have an Executive that covers the full spectrum of skills and experience ranging from accomplished careers to new members interested in promoting our profession. The synergy of effort is inspiring.
I see this coming year as a path of succession – to develop the next generation of Chapter leaders and volunteers – seems like there are better ideas coming forward each year. You’ll see some of this in the form of a revised Chapter website and new and exciting events to add to those we traditionally presented.
