Licensing Requirements

Individuals licensed by the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) are the only people permitted by law to undertake and assume responsibility for engineering work in Ontario. There are 5 types of Engineering licences: 1) Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) , 2) Provisional, 3) Temporary, 4) Limited, 5) Consulting Engineer licence.

If you have a business and you would like to perform Engineering work, you also require a Certificate of Authorization (COA) for your business.

Professional Practice Exam (PPE)

The PEO – Professional Practice Exam (PPE) is organized three times a year: once every Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer. There are two part to the exam: Part A) Ethics, and Part B) Engineering Law. The exam is three hours long. Both Part A and Part B are provided at the beginning of the exam and you decide how much time to spend on each part.

Exam Prep: The PEO does not support any specific courses or instructors that help to prepare for this exam, however many good courses are available.

Non-Canadian Technical Exams

If you do not have an undergraduate degree in engineering from a program accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), your academic background will be assessed by PEO to determine whether it is equivalent to the established standards. PEO will assign technical exams to give you an opportunity to confirm (Confirmatory Examination Program) that your academic preparation is equivalent or to remedy any identified deficiencies (Specific Examination Program).

Exam Prep: The PEO does not offer any technical exam prep courses or support any specific organization or instructors that help to prepare for technical exams, however please know that non-PEO courses are available.
